Institut für Computerbasiertes Entwerfen und Baufertigung

The Institute for Computational Design (ICD) is dedicated to the teaching and research of computational design and computer-aided manufacturing processes in architecture with a specific focus on robotic fabrication. The ICD runs a robotic fabrication laboratory for implementation and experimentation purposes.

The ICD’s goal is to prepare students for the continuing advancement of computational processes in architecture, as they merge the fields of design, engineering, planning and construction. The topics are examined through the development of computational methods which balance the reciprocities of form, material, structure and environment, and integrate technological advancements in manufacturing for the production of performative material and building systems.

New architectural application scenarios of fiber composites

New architectural application scenarios of fiber composites are investigated within the fields of research at the ICD.
The goal is to use the materials anisotropic structural properties to design and fabricate geometrically differentiated fiber composite building elements with load specific fiber arrangements for applications in material efficient lightweight structures. Novel design and fabrication strategies are being developed, including a “coreless” robotic filament winding process which reduces the need to manufacture various winding mandrels for geometrically different building compo- nents and allows for differentiated fiber arrangements. The potential of these processes are tested in architectural scale demonstrators which are constructed in cooperation with the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE).
