Textile innovations from saxony
The STFI in Chemnitz has been an outstanding innovation partner and service provider for its customers since it was founded in 1992. Textile materials have shaped our activity profile ever since. The non-profit institute addresses technical and social issues through an open, interdisciplinary and reliable approach. The main topics of work at STFI are technical textiles, nonwovens, lightweight textile construction, functionalisation, recycling, digitalisation and Industry 4.0. Additionally, STFI gathered many years of experience and expertise in textile testing as well as certifying personal protective equipment (PPE) and geosynthetics. In the future, the STFI will continue along this path and establish the Center for Sustainability in the next step.

Recycling of high performance fibres

Sustainable? From the very beginning!
Textile recycling has been a focus of the STFI since its foundation. As early as 1993, the first Colloquium “recycling for textiles” was held, which has since provided information on textile recycling trends every two years. With the studies on carbon fibre recycling that began in 2005, the focus shifted to the recycling of highperformance fibres and led to the founding of the Centre for Textile Lightweight Engineering at the STFI. Currently, this path is being consistently pursued further. The recycling of smart textiles, function-integrated composites and cooperation with industrial partners for the in-house recycling of production waste are just some of the topics.
